Welcome from Robert Cottrill
Thank you for taking the time to explore these exciting opportunities, working for our forward-thinking and truly innovative councils. Lewes and Eastbourne have been sharing services for a number of years now, and as we emerge out of the Coronavirus pandemic, we find ourselves at a crucial point in our Recovery and Reset journey. The roles we are advertising here are all critical to ensuring we are successful in that journey. They span a range of service areas and have varied responsibilities and requirements so please spend some time looking at the information on the site and understanding not only the roles that we have available but also the fantastic benefits of working for Lewes and Eastbourne councils.
I am immensely proud of all that we do and the positive impact our services have on our residents and businesses, and I hope you enjoy reading about the opportunities we have, along with some thoughts below from just a few of our colleagues about what it’s like working for the councils.
Robert Cottrill, Chief Executive
What is it like working at Lewes District and Eastbourne Borough Councils?
“I have worked for Lewes District and Eastbourne Borough Councils, ICT department for many years. I am dedicated to my role as the Business Applications Manager, leading the Applications Management team, which acts as a second line escalation from initial Service Desk contact. It is a varied and interesting role and I feel really valued.
The councils are a diverse organisation delivering a wide range of services and employing people with an even broader range of skills. It provides excellent training and career development opportunities, including support towards professional qualifications, which I took up. Some of the benefits include hybrid flexible working arrangements including work from home, generous annual leave entitlement and access to the Local Government pension scheme. There are also other benefits including health and wellbeing initiatives and a confidential employee assistance programme.
I have a great, enthusiastic and motivated team and together we support the councils ICT systems.”
Jo, Business Applications Manager
“The organisation really rewards and values success; one of the best things about working for the councils is the opportunities it has given me that have enabled me to quickly progress in my career - it is a great place to start or develop a career in local government!”
Harry, Housing Needs and Standards lead
“My favourite thing about working for Lewes and Eastbourne Councils is the feeling that I am giving back to the community and area in which I live and work. I can’t believe what amazing parks, restaurants and history is within the Borough and District and I feel that by working for Lewes and Eastbourne I can help provide support to its residents and visitors by helping them with their queries so that they too can enjoy and feel proud of this area.
I absolutely adore the feeling that I have helped someone when at their lowest point, whether this is helping them understand why they have a council Tax summons and what we can do to help, or speaking with a vulnerable adult about their mental health and what we can offer and also signposting to other services within the area, or helping those who are struggling with putting their bins out and offering a service they didn’t realise they were entitled to and hearing how grateful they gives me a real boost!”
Louise - Customer First Resolution Team Leader
“It sounds like a cliché, but the best thing about working here is the people – everyone works together in a friendly and supportive way to achieve what is needed. It doesn’t matter what department or position you are in; your input is valued.
No day is the same as the last, there’s always something new and interesting to tackle and there’s room for progression and personal development.”
Josh - Customer First Resolution Team Leader
“There is a really strong focus on mental health and work-life balance here. There’s a good culture of taking care of your mental health and a lot of resources available. This is also the first company I have worked for where I feel that people who are genuinely good at their job or eager to better themselves are recognised and given opportunities to advance themselves and their skills.
I love the variety and the fact that I have a lot of control over how I work, I can change around my workdays to suit me best.”
Francesca - Digital Business Analyst
“I love feeling that I am part of a community and a close-knit team. There is a high level of support from my peers and management and I feel lucky to work alongside such a great mix of people.”
Alice - Customer First Resolution Team Advisor
“The best thing about working for Lewes and Eastbourne is being part of administration of the district and borough. I enjoy gaining knowledge of the area where I live, and how things work. I now have a broad knowledge of a variety of areas from tourism to homelessness, council tax and bins.
I really enjoy helping people in practical ways, resolving problems, being the friendly face of the councils.”
Rosie - Customer First Resolution Team Advisor
“I enjoy working councils knowing that my efforts are contributing towards improving our communities and local environment.“
Sam – Team Leader, Case Management
“I’ve been working with EBC for nearly 14 years – the organisation has really helped and nurtured me throughout my time with them. I have been given the opportunity to grow and progress into what I would perceive as a valued part of the team and when I experienced some difficult times I was looked after with care and compassion. I feel thankful and humbled thinking about it but yes this hasn’t changed, wavered, or diminished in any way in any of the of the four departments that I have work in.”
Neil – Community Recycling Engagement Officer
"In my role I work closely with groups of people who have historically been under-served. It is a privilege to make a positive contribution to the local community. It’s rewarding to see problems solved, projects brought to life and real change happen.”
Devan - Policy and Engagement Coordinator
“When I started working for Lewes and Eastbourne Councils, I had no idea of the wide range of services the councils are responsible for, and the many ways we can help our residents and visitors.
All the service areas work together as one big team; sharing knowledge and experience, and I am extremely proud of all the work that goes on ‘behind the scenes’ to improve residents’ lives, and our beautiful, local, environment.
I feel so lucky to be part of an organisation which values its residents, its staff, and which is constantly striving to improve services and leave a positive mark on our local area.
My colleagues have become friends, and my managers have always been kind, caring, and compassionate. Along with a great pension, a fair salary, and a generous holiday entitlement, my time working with the council’s has been very happy and very rewarding.
Once working for the councils, opportunities open up to help organise internationally renowned events, to work with theatres to bring exciting shows to the stage, or volunteer with the Heritage Team to uncover our past. I couldn’t be more proud”
Hillary – Senior Advisor, Customer First Resolution Team
“The best thing about working at the council is the flexible working hours. I’m able to strike a perfect balance between my work life and my personal life and this in turn has a positive impact on my wellbeing and productivity. As a parent and also a carer for elderly parents I find this invaluable.”
Kerry - Organisational Effectiveness and Performance Officer
